Eastern students conduct research in every major. Unlike at larger institutions, where faculty-mentored research is chiefly conducted by graduate students, Eastern students can start conducting professional research as early as their first year. Research projects can be team-based and part of a class or conducted as independent study. Students also have a host of presentation and publication opportunities to share their research and learn valuable professional/academic skills in the process. Faculty mentors in each academic department support student researchers, with overall coordination provided by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity.

Posters on the Hill

This annual research conference at the U.S. Capitol brings together undergraduate students representing their states. Eastern students have presented their research at Posters on the Hill and represented Connecticut the past six straight years and eight of the past 13.

Each year at the on-campus Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern conference, more than 300 students from all majors present their research, showcase their artwork, perform on stage and share their research and creative talents with the community.

COPLAC conference

Eastern will play virtual host to students from nine public liberal arts colleges on Nov. 7 for COPLAC's annual Northeast regional conference. Students have worked hard preparing research and creative works for this competitive meeting, modified for the pandemic.

Dual Language Research

Fatma Godina '22

Fatima co-authored a published article on dual language learners in preschool classrooms. “As a dual language learner myself, it was really interesting to be part of this study. This experience really sparked an interest in the field of research. I love learning, and I think that’s one of the main things that you do as a researcher — you just never stop learning.”

Posters on the Hill

Tyler Wright '22

Tyler was one of 60 undergraduate students nationwide selected to present at the prestigious Posters on the Hill conference. To an audience of legislators, Wright presented on hospital length of stay (LOS) and readmission rates. “While I am not sure how this conference will impact my career going forward, I hope it could potentially lead to some job opportunities.”

Dual Language Research

Abigail Bourdon ’22

Abigail’s research on the play of dual language preschoolers was published in a peer-reviewed journal. “I am lucky to not only have learned throughout the experience, but also grateful to have expanded the field of education. Having the opportunity to participate in research was one of the best parts of Eastern and it confirmed my passion to continue to teach and learn about children’s development.”
